ARE SO VALUED?
Indonesian South Sea pearls are highly valued for their size and thick narce, as well as their colours.
PINCTADA MAXIMA oysters produce pearls with an average size of 8 - 15 mm. Ocasional specimens fall in the 16 - 21 mm range. The species naturally secretes narce thicker than that of other pearl-bearing mollusks, resulting in an average thickness of 1.5 to 2.00 mm, and in exeptional cases, up to 3.5mm.
The colour of a pear os primarily determined by the colour of the narce or mother-of-pearl of the donor oyster from which the mantle piece is taken. Two different colour varieties of Pinctada maxima exist, which produce different coloured pearls:
Silver lipped Pinctada maxima produce white and silver pearls ranging from pure white to cream and silver, with tones and overtones of red, green, and silver.
Gold lipped Pinctada maxima produce golden pearls, ranging from pale yellow through champagne to intense gold, with the same tones and overtones as those found in white pearls.
Dominant tones can profoundly alter the apperance of a pearl, such as the pink apperance of white pearls with red tones, while more gentle overtones result in a more subtle deviation in apperance from the underlying colour. When the conchiolin layer of a pearl constitues more than one third of the thickness of the calcium carbonate layering, it may have a bluish or greyish colour.
The overtones present in the pearls produced by Pinctada maxima make them particulary striking. Blue and green are the most commonly observed overtones, while red is also sometimes observed.
